Description

The RMMV Oceanic III was a planned, ambitious White Star Line ocean liner designed to be the company’s new flagship in the late 1920s and early 1930s, intended to replace aging vessels like the Homeric. Primarily designed as a “big sister” to the MV Britannic and MV Georgic, the vessel was intended to exceed 1,000 feet in length, with a gross tonnage of approximately 60,000, aiming to be the largest liner ever built at the time.

Following the signing of the contract, the keel was laid with fanfare at Harland & Wolff in 1928. However, the onset of the Great Depression and the resulting financial crisis of the White Star Line caused construction to cease. The partially built hull was later dismantled, with its steel plates famously repurposed for the construction of the Georgic. Had it been completed, the four-screw motor ship would have significantly altered the Atlantic travel landscape, but it ultimately remained a “what if” in maritime history.
